Don’t laugh, but this is my favorite piece of furniture to recommend:
I purchased one of these 4-tier shelves from Target, and then two more from Walmart while stateside. That was back in 2009, and I’m STILL using them.
Today you can buy one online or in-store at your choice of Target ($51.99) walmart ($61.79, or a version with casters for $154), or Amazon ($64.99). The general dimensions are about 36″ w x 14″D x 60″ H, but sizes vary by store brand.
I have styled them for my kitchen, bathroom, garage, and closets over the years, depending on the needs of our home. Here in Baku one is back in the kitchen (shown above) and one is in our master bathroom, acting as a sort of linen closet (below). The industrial simplicity makes them my perfect chameleon piece – and after all, isn’t simplicity the ultimate sophistication?
They are pouch-safe for shipping at about 26 lbs, (obviously assembly is required). The shelves are adjustable.
They are almost idiot (moving company) proof to assemble and disassemble, and they require no saving of directions or custom tools.
They’re the best.
(Styling notes: Black and white laundry baskets and towels in my bathroom were recently purchased online from h&m. Pretty much everything on my kitchen shelving is from Target, except for the Classic Century Sauce Boat and Honey Pot from Crate & Barrel. I order all my spices from Penzeys – they’re amazingly fresh and their jars are beautifully simple! And of course, about half of all my consumables are from my food heaven, Wegmans.)
What piece of furniture has made itself useful to you time and again? What stylish furnishing of yours looks just as at home in Dushanbe as it did in D.C.?
